Intermediate Program
The intermediate program encompasses grades three through five. It includes a comprehensive academic curriculum and provides numerous opportunities for students to excel through participation in academic competitions. Christian values are incorporated throughout the curriculum as well as being a focus of religious education. Students also learn about catholic doctrine and practice their faith through daily prayer and Scripture reading, participation in the sacraments, and monthly worship. The language arts curriculum is literature-based and incorporates grammar, creative writing and the writing process, phonics, spelling, penmanship, and oral presentations. In addition to basic skills using the four standard math processes, the math program includes geometry, decimals, and fractions. Higher order thought processes and critical thinking are encouraged by employing the use of maniuplatives, games, problem solving activities, and calculators. Calculators are used as an enhancement tool for computing and are not a substitute for student knowledge of basic skills. Students study Pennsylvania history, geography, and American history as part of the social studies program. The program concentrates on the dynamic interrelationship of people and their environment relative to events that occur in history. Students analyze the effect of events on the social and political climates of the time and the resultant changes that shape future history. Students also participate in the Junior Achievement enrichment program which emphasizes economics. In science, students investigate materials, organisms, sound, light, electricity, and properties of matter. Students engage in experiments and activities to promote inquiry, research, and problem solving. Students learn artistic expression through thematic and seasonal projects using a variety of media. The study of techniques of great masters is included in instruction. In addition to the art curriculum, art is integrated into all subject areas to encourage personal expression and creativity. In music, students expand their knowledge of the mechanics of music. They explore sound and rhythm by listening, singing, movement, and by playing assorted musical instruments. Students also investigate the different styles of music and learn about the numerous musical instruments that constitute an orchestra. Physical education concentrates on exercise and developing teamwork in physical games and sports. In addition to the physical exercise, students learn about proper nutrition and other appropriate personal health issues.
